Anne Hathaway Lands Role as the Grand High Witch in New Adaptation of ‘The Witches’

Deadline is reporting today that American actress and singer Anne Hathaway has been cast to play the grand high witch in Robert Zemeckis’ new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1973 children’s fantasy novel The Witches.

Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron will produce the new adaptation of Dahl’s story. The project will be more rooted in the original source material, while the Huston movie was a loose adaptation. Zemeckis version will take place in the ’60s Gothic South.

In the original film:

While staying at a hotel in England with his grandmother, Helga, young Luke inadvertently spies on a convention of witches. The Grand High Witch reveals a plan to turn all children into mice through a magical formula. When they find that Luke has overheard, the witches test the formula on him. Now, with the help of Helga and the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer, Luke the mouse must fight back against the witches.

Viola Davis (Widows) is circling the project as well.
