George A. Romero Co-writing Modern-day Zombie Flick ‘Road of the Dead’!

Since the last post we shared with you regarding George A. Romero’s struggles to find funding for his noir-style zombie flick, nothing has changed. It’s a sad thought to think that his next project, which has been sitting on a shelve for years, isn’t able to get made.

Well, we do have some good news for all you Romero fans. Titled Road of the Dead, a new project that he is currently co-writing a screenplay for, along with Matt Birman, who served as second unit director on Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead. Birman wrote the script 10 years ago and is set:

on an island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum for the entertainment of wealthy humans.

Birman describes the project as “Road Warrior meets Rollerball at a Nascar race”, and reveals significant inspiration was taken from Ben-Hur.

While we still hope to see Romero get his own film made, this will do very nicely for all of us zombie nuts. Stay tuned for more updates on Road of the Dead only at Dark Universe.
