10 of the Best Horror Movie Sequels of All-Time

Here is a list of some of the best horror movie sequels from 1986 to 1991. Quite a few of these titles are what I would call slightly underrated horror movies, and are one’s that I feel don’t get enough mentions among fans in the horror community.

I have placed the following list of the best horror movie sequels in no arranged order.

1. Bride of Re-Animator (1991)

Devious duo Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) and Dr. Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) are back in the gory, monster-filled sequel to Stuart Gordon’s classic 1985 horror film Re-Animator. Director Brian Yuzna’s Bride of Re-Animator is probably high up on a lot of horror fan’s lists as one of the better horror sequels of the early 90s, and rightly so. There’s plenty of blood and guts on offer here. Hands down one of the best horror movie sequels of its time.

2. Halloween II (1981)

What makes Halloween II an intriguing sequel is that it takes place the very same night as original John Carpenter classic. Michael continues his pursue of Laurie Strode in an hospital setting after he finds out her whereabouts on a news bit that plays out on a radio of a passer by. Definitely one of the better horror sequels of its time. If you love a good stalker style slasher film, this one will keep you entertained for 90-minutes.

3. House II: The Second Story (1987)

Up next is one of my personal favorite horror sequels not only in the House series, but horror in general. It’s a fun follow up to the original with plenty of laughs, creatures, and gore moments throughout its 90-minute duration. After Gramps is resurrected by Jesse and his friend Jonathan, things start to get really interesting once a powerful crystal skull is introduced.

4. Fright Night Part 2 (1988)

An underrated follow-up to Tom Holland’s classic 1985 vampire film Fright Night. Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, the 1988 sequel introduces Julie Carmen as the film’s antagonist Regine Dandrige, who is the vampire sister of Jerry Dandrige from the original. Did I forget to mention that Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) and Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall) are back reprising their roles from the first film? That’s right, the vampire killing duo return. It’s a fun sequel with plenty of monsters and some nice practical effects work throughout.

5. Evil Dead II (1987)

The bonkers sequel to Sam Raimi’s original 1981 splatter film The Evil Dead. In Evil Dead II, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) heads to a secluded cabin in the woods, where he must once again do battle with a bunch of possessed deadites. What can you expect from the sequel, I hear you ask? Well, I can promise you more of the same is on offer here from the first film, but with the gore level cranked up a notch. You won’t be disappointed with this one.

6. Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988)

Kirsty Cotton must once again do battle with Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and his gang of cenobites in the sequel to Clive Barker’s gruesome 1987 horror film Hellraiser. Regarded by a large majority of horror fans as one of the greatest sequels to come out of the 1980s. The special make-up effects work on offer here is almost as good as the stuff seen in the first film. Truly great sequel!

7. Demons 2 (1986)

Next up is the sequel to director Lamberto Bava’s 1985 Italian horror classic Demons. This time around the action takes place inside of a high-rise building complex, where the residents become victims of blood-thirsty Demons. If you loved the first film, you will probably enjoy Demons 2 just as much. The gore alone will put a smile on any horror fans face.

8. Child’s Play 2 (1990)

Everyone’s favorite killer doll is back in the sequel to director Don Mancini’s 1988 slasher film Child’s Play. For a large majority of Chucky fans, Child’s Plays 2 to this day remains a firm favorite in the popular horror series. Chucky is back meaner and deadlier than ever before. Expect some great kills and a few nice surprises throughout.

9. Creepshow 2 (1987)

A horror anthology sequel that delivers the goods. Creepshow 2 has three eerie tales of terror, including Old Chief Woodenhead, The Raft, and The Hitchhiker. Not quite as many stories as seen in the original Creepshow, but there’s enough frights here to keep any horror fan happy. One highlight being Tom Savini as The Creep.

10. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

The Sawyer family is back in the sequel to Tobe Hooper’s classic 1974 horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This time around, Leatherface and his cannibalistic family members have set up business in an abandoned amusement park deep underground, where they have continued to live their macabre lifestyle for over a decade. A great sequel with plenty of crazy antics and gore.
