It’s a new year finally. We survived the hell that was 2020 and I’m looking forward to the future. While we don’t know exactly what will happen between now and then, the horror world has us a lot to look forward to this year. There are many different movies that are scheduled to release this year that I’m very excited about.
Here is a list of my most anticipated releases for this year in no particular order:
1. Halloween Kills
We were supposed to get this last year but COVID-19 made us wait till this year but I’m still excited to see what happens next as Michael has returned to Haddonfield and is once again after Laurie Strode. Seeing them attempt to burn him alive in the last one, I have a feeling that Michael will be back with a vengeance. Expect a lot of brutality in this one. A teaser was released last October.
Release date: (October 15th, 2021).
2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I’ve always been a big fan of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise so it’s no secret that I’m a little bit excited about the upcoming new sequel to the 1974 original. It unfortunately hasn’t had the best start as the original directors Andy & Ryan Tohill exited the film a week into production and have been replaced by David Blue Garcia. I’m still optimistic that the film will hold up to my expectations. I patiently wait for a teaser trailer to drop. No official release date as of yet but the official poster artwork looks amazing and there’s a website up now that you can visit: https://texaschainsaw.com.
Release date: (TBA 2021).
3. Candyman
Another film we were supposed to get last year but the pandemic screwed it up but nonetheless, I’m still excited to see it this year. Candyman has always been a favorite of mine that I feel doesn’t get the appreciation it should. That film made Tony Todd a horror icon after his performance as Candyman. This new film is described as “sequel successor” to the original 1992 slasher. Jordan Peele wrote the script and Nia DaCosta directed the film so my hopes are high with this one especially after seeing the trailer earlier last year.
Release date: (August 27th, 2021).
4. Willy’s Wonderland
As soon as I heard about this film last year, my interest was there but then Nicolas Cage was announced to star in it and it became a must watch for me especially after seeing his work on Mandy and Color Out Of Space. Nic Cage meets Five Nights at Freddy’s. Sign me up. The trailer makes this look exactly like I wanted it to be, just a bloody, fun film.
Release date: (February 12th, 2021).
5. Terrifier 2
Just one of many films we were supposed to get last year but didn’t. Thanks coronavirus! David Howard Thornton’s performance as Art The Clown in the original instantly made me a fan. Terrifier was just a fun, gory slasher and I expect no different from this sequel. No official release date as of yet but it is expected to release early during the year. A teaser was released last year that has me even more excited for this to release. David Howard Thornton has gone on record and said there is a scene in this one that rivals the infamous ‘hacksaw scene’ from the original.
Release date: (Early 2021 TBA).
6. Spiral: From The Book of Saw
Originally supposed to release October of last year, we will see the horrifying traps of the Saw universe back on our screens once again this May! This film is said to serve as a “reimagining of the franchise”. Chris Rock teams up with Darren Lynn Bousman, who was the director for Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV. Rock came up with the story for it after meeting with the heads of Lionsgate Films. Chris Rock stars in it alongside Samuel L. Jackson. As a fan of the Saw franchise, I can’t wait to see this one. The trailer looks great!
Release date: (May 21st, 2021).
7. Wrong Turn
Wrong Turn has always been a gory, campy, fun series to watch so as soon as I heard there was reboot being made, I was looking forward to seeing a trailer release. The trailer makes this look like it’s going to be a more serious, dark film different to the campiness we have seen in the original films. For one night only, you can see the Wrong Turn reboot in theaters on January 26th. The film will get a worldwide release later on. After seeing the trailer, I may have to try and go see this one.
Release date: (January 26th, 2021).
8. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Do It
The third installment in The Conjuring series will arrive this June after being delayed last year! I’ve enjoyed the other two installments as well as most of the connected universe films so I’m looking forward to seeing this one. I love what James Wann has created with this series. In this installment, we see the Warrens come face to face with a murderer who claims to be under demonic possession. No official trailer has been released yet at the time of this post.
Release date: (June 4th, 2021).
9. A Quiet Place Part II
The last of many on this list that was delayed last year. The first time I watched the original, I was so amazed by the atmosphere of the film and just everything about it. I loved how the family had created their own little ways of staying silent but still being able to live out their lives. Director John Krasinski created something very special and I expect no less from this sequel. A trailer was released that has me counting down the days till I can see this. It seems that not only are the same threats from the original still present, but now there are some new dangers that are lurking around the corner.
Release date: (April 23rd, 2021).
