Ari Aster Teaming with ‘Parasite’ Studio for English-Language Remake of ‘Save The Green Planet’

Midsommar and Hereditary director Ari Aster is teaming with CJ Entertainment, the studio behind the Oscar-winning Parasite, to remake the Korean cult classic Save The Green Planet! The film will be directed by Joon-Hwang Jang, who directed the original, and executive produced by CJ Group vice chairwoman Miky Lee and CJ Entertainment’s Young-ki Cho and Jerry Ko. Also joining Aster is Lars Knudsen, producer of Midsommar and Hereditary.

Aster and Knudsen commented on the upcoming project saying:

Swinging with youthful abandon between white-knuckle suspense, absurd slapstick, grim horror and a deeply felt (and earned) sense of tragedy, Save The Green Planet! is one of the most remarkable films to come out of South Korea – among this recent wave or any wave, for that matter. When we heard that director Jang was passionate about revisiting this iconic work, bringing it to the US and updating it to reflect the mess of the world today (which feels even more ripe for this kind of apocalyptic skewering than when the film was first released), we leapt at the chance to be a part of it. We’re honored to be partnering with CJ and with the brilliant director Jang.

Synopsis for the 2003 original reads: “Lee Byeong-gu (Shin Ha-gyun) is convinced that there are aliens from Andromeda among us, plotting to destroy Earth. He believes that Kang Man-shik (Yun-shik Baek), the head of a chemical production company, is their leader, and he kidnaps him. Holing up in his secret lair, Byeong-gu interrogates and tortures the supposed alien, hoping that he will confess to his crimes against humanity and call off the planned destruction of the planet before it is too late.
