Director Luca Guadagnino has been promising that his remake of Italian horror master Dario Argento’s 1977 masterpiece Suspiria will be a homeage to the original, and he hopes to empower women in the upcoming film.

While talking to Yahoo Movies about the film, Guadagnino said: “I hope that this movie, made by a man, turns out to be experienced through the horrors as a sort of fierce showcase of the female artistic experience. The relentless, unsentimental idea of femininity that I grew up witnessing, that I’ve been accompanied by in my life. It’s going to be the witches are back.

Frenesy Film Company, Mythology Entertainment, First Sun Films, and Memo Films produce. Guadagnino, Brad Fischer, Kajganich, Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Marco Morabito, Gabriele Moratti, William Sherak, and Silvia Venturini Fendi are producers on the title while James Vanderbilt, Paul Deason, Massimiliano Violante, and Carlo Antonelli exec produce.

Suspiria follows Susie Bannion, a young American woman who travels to the prestigious Markos Tanz Company in Berlin in 1977, arriving just as one of its members, Patricia, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. As Susie makes extraordinary progress under the guidance of Madame Blanc, the Company’s revolutionary artistic director, she befriends another dancer, Sara, who shares her suspicions that the Matrons, and the Company itself, may be harboring a dark and menacing secret.

Suspiria stars Dakota Johnson as (Susie Bannion), Tilda Swinton as (Madame Blanc), Chloë Grace Moretz as (Patricia), Mia Goth as (Sara), Jessica Harper as (Anke), Angela Winkler as (Miss Tanner), Sylvie Testud as (Miss Griffith), Renée Soutendijk as (Miss Huller), Ingrid Caven as (Miss Vendegast), Lutz Ebersdorf as (Dr. Jozef Klemperer) and Malgorzata Bela as (Mother).

Amazon Studios picked up the project last year for worldwide distribution rights and is financing production.
