Get Ready for Horror at The Fantasia International Film Festival 2021

Get ready for The Fantasia International Film Festival!

Fantasia Fest 2021 returns from August 5 to August 25 to celebrate its 25th year.

Fantasia 2021 will have live screenings at Cinéma Impérial, Cinéma du Musée, and Place de la Paixand, and on-demand streaming for pass-holders, geo-restricted to Canada.

Horror fans and cinephiles in Canada can buy individual tickets for live screenings, or virtual features for $8 or purchase a digital festival pass for $75.

The panels, discussions, tributes, special events, and the My First Fantasia Short Program will stream internationally, for free on Zoom. No geolock!

Some festival horror highlights include:

PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND, starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Sion Sono

AGNES, directed and co-written by Mickey Reece and John Selvidge, a horror drama about a nun, that’s right, a nun.

JUNK HEAD, an existential stop-motion horror story by Takahide Hori, described by Guillermo del Toro, as “A one-man band work of deranged brilliance! Monumental will and imagination at work.”

WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED, a thoughtful and perceptive documentary about the origins of folk horror, directed by Kier-La Janisse.

HAUNTING THE NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS: THE RISE OF INDIGENOUS HORROR, a presentation by Dr. Kali Simmons, previously held at the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies. “In recent years, Indigenous filmmakers in the United States and Canada have increasingly embraced horror as a means to narrate their historic and ongoing experiences under settler-colonialism.”

A DIFFERENT MONSTER: BLACK WOMEN AND THE MONSTROUS, a presentation by Carolyn Mauricette. “We’ll look at some of the most interesting characters, whether vampires, witches or supernatural beings, and see how even in their otherness and within problematic representation, they have power, agency and represent the vulnerability and strength Black women have possessed through the ages.”

BOTANICUM EROTICORUM, a short film program about sexuality in film, viewer discretion is advised.
