Warner Bros. Will Release New Adaptation of Roald Dahl's ‘The Witches’ in October, 2020

Thanks to an update via the good people over at the Exhibitor Relations website, Warner Bros. Pictures is set to bring writer/director Robert Zemeckis‘ The Witches movie to theaters next year in time for Halloween – October 16th, 2020.

We recently learned via Deadline that that American actress and singer Anne Hathaway has been cast to play the Grand High Witch in Zemeckis’ 2020 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches. Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water) will play the grandmother.

Hathaway will have some big shoes to fill when she takes on the role made iconic by American actress Anjelica Huston in the beloved 1990 adaptation. Hopefully we get a scary looking Grand High Witch with the use of practical effects and minimal CGI.

Synopsis: “Grandmamma loves to tell about witches. Real witches are the most dangerous of all living creatures on earth. There’s nothing they hate so much as children, and they work all kinds of terrifying spells to get rid of them. Her grandson listens closely to Grandmamma’s stories—but nothing can prepare him for the day he comes face-to-face with The Grand High Witch herself!

Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron will produce the new adaptation of Dahl’s story. The project will be more rooted in the original source material, while the Huston movie was a loose adaptation. Zemeckis version will take place in the ’60s Gothic South.

Viola Davis (Widows) is circling the project as well.
